The next day, I had to wear a long-sleeved shirt under my Chipped Mug tee to cover the bruises that seemed to darken further in the night. True to his word, Theo stuck by me like glue. Every time I walked in the back, he followed, or at the very least, he moved around to a place he could see me from. I appreciated the concern, but it made me feel like a kid and after a few hours, it started to piss me off.
I complained, yelled and snapped at him several times in my frustration, but he just let it roll off his shoulders and ignored my outbursts. That only pissed me off even more.
Around eleven o’clock in the morning, three very large men walked in wearing crisp black suits and sunglasses. They reminded me of Men in Black. After they ordered several pastries and coffees, I noticed them talking to Theo as he made their drinks. It was weird because Theo is usually super friendly with all the customers, but with these guys, he looked so serious, like he was in deep conversation with them. They even kept up the conversation while Theo served a few other customers. After a few minutes, the three suits sat at a table near the door of my coffee shop. I watched for a minute as they pulled laptops and file folders out of their briefcases and started working… or I’m guessing they were working.
I walked over to Theo and asked, “Do you know those guys?”
He glanced at me, “Uh, not really, but they know a… friend of mine.”
I stared at him for a long moment with narrowed eyes. I didn’t think he would lie to me, but he also didn’t seem to be telling the truth. I was thinking there must be more to the story, but he didn’t want to tell me for some reason. I gave him a slight nod before turning around and walking back to the register.
He followed me, “What do you want to do for lunch?” I guess he’s just going to ignore it, even though I know he can tell that I didn’t believe him. He always reads me like an open book.
“There’s some leftover pasta in the fridge I was gonna heat up.” I glanced at him and despite my unease about him and the suits, I still told him, “There should be enough for both of us.”
He looked surprised for a fraction of a second before his dimples popped out, “You sure?”
I sighed, “Yeah. I’ll throw it in in a few minutes.”
Staring at his dimples and stubble, I had the sudden urge to run my fingers over his cheeks and pull him into a kiss. And then lick those damn dimples like I’ve been wanting to since the first time I saw them. But, we were in the middle of my store, in the middle of the work day, so instead, I sighed again and simply turned around, lifted the display case door and started shifting the pastries around to make them look more presentable.
